Akon....rapper, singer, songwriter, businessman, and record producer adds ‘humanitarian’ to his resume
Akon (aka, Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam) has made it his mission to make the planet a better place through the power of solar energy.
The Akon Lighting Africa organization was launched in 2014, and has since provided solar street lamps and panels in over one million households in 14 African countries. Akon grew up in Kaolack, Senegal, a town without electricity, and it’s his memories of a “life without light” that fuels his commitment.
The compassionate artist has already made power possible with his African initiative, and now he plans to spread the love and light to Latin America. It’s not just about being able to see after the sun goes down, it’s also about safety and productivity.
Via his Instagram account, a photo showed Akon meeting with Antonio Carlos Magalhães, the mayor of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil to talk about how solar-powered electricity can benefit poor communities. The men are smiling and shaking hands – looks like it’s a done deal.
Shout out to this brotha doing good work and making such an impact internationally.
