The greatest shooter in NBA history (depends on you who ask), Steph Curry recently lent his star power to Liberty University to collect 20,000 pair of shoes to send to Republic of Congo, Africa.
This was a team effort born out of a partnership with the founder of Kick'n It for a Cause Chris "COSeezy" Strachan who is also an LU alum.
This is a significant contribution as the top causes of death in the Congo are illnesses which can be contracted through bare feet. The Center for Disease Control cites diarrheal diseases, lower respiratory infections, and malaria as the most lethal. These shoes can literally save lives.
Curry visited the campus on March 1 for the Kick'n It for a Cause shoe drive and the school's convocation, but the men's basketball coach was not going to pass on an opportunity for the Golden State Warriors star to share the secrets to his winning ways with the team:
"Before all this NBA hoopla, from my journey coming from a small school like Davidson [College], I had the same kind of look that you all have in your eyes right now," Curry said. "Just hyped to play and ready to go. It’s an amazing opportunity to do it and do it together. Because every single one of you has a role and a part of your success… Have fun doing what you’re doing, and just enjoy it."
All and all, this was a win for everyone involved. And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how you use your platform to give back and pay it forward. Well done!
