There are numerous reasons why Donald Trump should not have been elected president, but one of the biggest is the fact that there is a lot of hate within his administration. If having Mike (thinks gays can be turned straight with electroshock therapy) Pence as his VP wasn’t enough, one of the first items on the list when he takes office in January is a bill that will do nothing but harm to the LGBTQ community.
Trump’s already said he’d sign this bill into law if it made its way through Congress. What’s the bill though? It’s the First Amendment Defense Act which claims to be protecting that religious freedom Republicans somehow think is being threatened in America because of gay people.
So it’s about not punishing those who want to turn away those they feel are imposing on their religious beliefs. You know, how there are bakeries who won’t make a cake for a marriage between a man and another man, or that county clerk Kim Davis who refused to issue a marriage license back in 2015 because she was acting “under God's authority.” Yes, this law would protect people like that - instead of citizens who have no prejudice in their heart.
It’s not just about protecting those who turn members of the LGBTQ community away when it comes to cakes and licenses. Nope, this would even go as far as hospitals. Imagine needing medical care and being told no based on being gay or transgender, and it being perfectly legal in the eyes of the new Trump regime.
Again, he’s all for this and even stated on his site, “If I am elected president and Congress passes the First Amendment Defense Act, I will sign it to protect the deeply held religious beliefs of Catholics and the beliefs of Americans of all faiths. The Little Sisters of the Poor, or any religious order for that matter, will always have their religious liberty protected on my watch and will not have to face bullying from the government because of their religious beliefs.”
Even if Congress doesn’t let this make it’s way to Trump and it doesn’t become a law, the fact that the leader of what is supposed to be one of the, if not the number one, greatest nation in the world is saying this is okay - we’ve got insanely large problems. Plus, unlike sexual orientation - religion is a choice.
